1948-2003

Zahra Kazemi was an Iranian-Canadian photojournalist. She was born in Shiraz but later moved to Paris, and eventually settled in Canada after completing her education at the University of Paris. In 2003, Kazemi returned to Iran to take photographs of demonstrations occurring in Tehran. While she was taking pictures of grieving mothers outside of Iran’s Evin Prison, security forces arrested her. She herself was placed in Evin, and while in custody, she was violently tortured, beaten, and raped. Her brutal injuries led to her death at age 55.
